Crowns and Bridges Q & A
What is a dental crown?
A crown is essentially a cap that goes over the top of your tooth. It restores your tooth’s size, shape, and strength so you can eat, drink, talk, and smile with confidence. And Warrington Dental ensures it’s colored to perfectly match your surrounding teeth.
Crowns are ideal when your tooth has experienced extensive damage due to decay or a traumatic incident. Adding a crown to your tooth protects it from further damage while keeping the natural tooth root intact.
Dental crowns can also be used to hold a bridge in place, restoring a full smile if you’re missing a tooth or multiple teeth.
What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is a replacement tooth or set of replacement teeth that restores your smile without you having to go through the process of getting a dental implant. Instead, the bridge is held in place by crowns placed over the abutting teeth on both sides of the gap in your smile.
Once the bridge is in place, it will look and feel just like your natural teeth. You’ll be able to eat and drink without any issues and you won’t have to worry about a gap in your smile anymore.
What’s the process like for getting a crown or bridge?
Getting a dental crown or bridge is a two-step process. During your first appointment at Warrington Dental, the team removes a small portion of your enamel (your tooth’s hard outer coating) to make space for the crown or crowns so they can sit flush with your surrounding teeth. Then, Warrington Dental takes a mold of your prepared tooth or teeth so they can custom-create your crown or bridge to fit perfectly over the tooth or teeth. You go home with a temporary crown or bridge over any treated teeth.
Once your crown or bridge is ready, you head back to Warrington Dental to have it affixed in place. You leave that appointment with a fully restored, strong smile.
If you’re feeling anxious about either of these appointments, don’t worry. Warrington Dental offers sedation dentistry so you can relax during your appointment.
